I am an experienced energy attorney with a focus on regulatory legal matters. I also routinely handle employment law and policy matters.

I am also active in reforming the Minnesota utility regulatory system. I serve as a commercial and industrial representative on the e21 Initiative (including serving on the regulatory, legislative, and utility incentive subgroups) and I served on the Legislative Energy Commission Energy Future Framework Core Team and as an advisor to the Citizens' League Energy 2.0 project

As lead counsel for the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce on the Enbridge Sandpiper contested case, I prepared testimony and represented the interests of the Minnesota Chamber throughout the proceedings and at the public hearings. I regularly represent the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce before the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission on complex regulatory and rate issues. I also negotiate regulatory settlement agreements with utilities, intervening parties, and regulators.

I also have substantial general leadership and communication experience. I have experience growing organizations while providing competent business advice as a former business owner. As a Humphrey Policy Fellow, my group project promoting civility in politics published an opinion piece in the Star Tribune.

George N. Grammas, co-leads our International Trade practice group. He routinely advises on US laws and regulations governing international trade including exports controls, economic sanctions, anticorruption, customs and antiboycott compliance; international technology transfer; non- US investment and participation in US defense and critical infrastructure industries; and US participation in NATO and foreign government programs. He assists organizations in obtaining US government approvals and clearances and in strengthening their international trade compliance through risk assessments, investigations, government disclosures, compliance programs and internal training.

George's primary areas of regulatory expertise are export controls, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR); economic sanctions (OFAC); Customs and Border Protection (CBP); the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA); security clearances under the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM); clearing non-US investment in the US defense and critical infrastructure industries through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS); and government contracts (FAR and DFARS).

In more than 25 years of practice, George has served as an adviser to industry associations and the US government including as an industry adviser to the State Department's Bureau of Political-Military Affairs through the Defense Trade Advisory Group; co-chair of the Joint Defense Trade Committee of Electronic Industries Alliance and the Aerospace Industries Association; chair of the export controls committee for CANEUS International, a micro/nano technology association; international trade counsel to the Electronic Industries Alliance; and legal adviser to the Society for International Affairs, the government/industry association on defense trade and export controls.

George is the author of numerous articles in legal and trade journals and is a frequent speaker at conferences and retreats. He was named part of the Legal Elite for 2009 by the readership of Washington SmartCEO.

Ainsworth to lead Mitchell's Center for Law and Business
William Mitchell College of Law is proud to announce Louis L. Ainsworth '77 as the college's new director for the Center for Law and Business. Ainsworth, who will also serve as a visiting professor of law, succeeds Jan Olsten '74, who helped found the center and served as its first executive director.

From 1997 to 2010 Ainsworth was senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary of Pentair, where he was responsible for all legal services provided to the company and its worldwide affiliates. As counsel for Faegre Baker Daniels since 2010, he focuses on corporate governance, securities regulation, mergers and acquisitions, and antitrust counseling. He has taught business-related courses at Mitchell as an adjunct professor for two years and will continue to teach business and business law courses at the school.

Now beginning its third full year, the Center for Law and Business is a one-of-a-kind program that gives Mitchell students even more essential tools as they prepare for a career in law, business, or both. The center offers courses with a non-law business curriculum, along with traditional business law courses.

Through the center, students can now earn a Certificate in Law and Business, which is unique to Mitchell. The certificate program supplements the law school's practical, skills-based legal education and focuses on the fundamentals of accounting and finance, business strategies and planning, taxation, risk management, branding and marketing, and intellectual property.
