Jim Martin began practicing employment and labor law in 1989 where he has focused on all areas of employment and labor law including, but not limited to, employment contracts, collective bargaining, administration of collective bargaining agreements, employee handbooks, wage and hour law, discrimination, unemployment compensation, employee discipline, unfair labor practices, grievance arbitration, covenants not to compete, the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, the Minnesota Teacher Continuing Contract Statute and the Minnesota Veterans' Preference Act. In addition, Jim serves as a hearing officer in termination cases under the Veterans' Preference Act and student expulsion matters under the Minnesota Pupil Fair Dismissal Act. Jim also acts as a neutral who conducts investigations of employee misconduct.

Jim has extensive experience in public sector employment and labor law gained through his seven years as Executive Director of Human Resources with the Bloomington, MN, Public Schools and five years as Director of Human Resources with the St. Louis Park, MN, Public Schools. Prior to his work in the schools, Jim spent five years representing public and private sector clients on a wide range of employment and labor law issues with a large Twin Cities firm. Jim was awarded his Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law where he was a staff member of the William Mitchell Law Review. Jim earned his MS in Industrial Relations from Purdue University and his BA in Psychology from William Jewell College in Liberty, MO.

Jim has presented to numerous organizations a wide variety of employment law topics such as hiring practices, employee discipline, properly conducting investigations of employee misconduct, employee off duty conduct, employee v. independent contractor, wage and hour law, the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, language in collective bargaining agreements duties and obligations of an organization's board of directors and joint powers agreements between government entities. Jim is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota for more than a decade where he has been teaching a class on school human resources administration to licensed teachers who are seeking administrative licensure.

Ainsworth to lead Mitchell's Center for Law and Business
William Mitchell College of Law is proud to announce Louis L. Ainsworth '77 as the college's new director for the Center for Law and Business. Ainsworth, who will also serve as a visiting professor of law, succeeds Jan Olsten '74, who helped found the center and served as its first executive director.

From 1997 to 2010 Ainsworth was senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary of Pentair, where he was responsible for all legal services provided to the company and its worldwide affiliates. As counsel for Faegre Baker Daniels since 2010, he focuses on corporate governance, securities regulation, mergers and acquisitions, and antitrust counseling. He has taught business-related courses at Mitchell as an adjunct professor for two years and will continue to teach business and business law courses at the school.

Now beginning its third full year, the Center for Law and Business is a one-of-a-kind program that gives Mitchell students even more essential tools as they prepare for a career in law, business, or both. The center offers courses with a non-law business curriculum, along with traditional business law courses.

Through the center, students can now earn a Certificate in Law and Business, which is unique to Mitchell. The certificate program supplements the law school's practical, skills-based legal education and focuses on the fundamentals of accounting and finance, business strategies and planning, taxation, risk management, branding and marketing, and intellectual property.
